General Questions
What is an optometrist?
An optometrist is a primary healthcare professional who specializes in the eye and vision system. We provide comprehensive eye care, including eye examinations, diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions, vision therapy, and the prescription of corrective lenses (glasses and contact lenses).
What are the benefits of seeing an optometrist?
Regular eye examinations are essential for maintaining good eye health and overall well-being. Optometrists can detect eye diseases in their early stages, often before you experience any symptoms. Early detection and treatment can help prevent vision loss.
How often should I have my eyes examined?
The recommended frequency of eye examinations can vary depending on your age, overall health, and risk factors for eye disease. Generally, children should have their eyes examined before starting school and then every two years until adulthood. Adults should have their eyes examined every two to four years, and more frequently if they have any risk factors for eye disease or wear contact lenses.
Eye Examination Questions
What happens during an eye examination?
A comprehensive eye examination typically includes a series of tests to assess your vision, eye health, and how well your eyes work together. These tests may include:
A visual acuity test to measure your ability to see at a distance and near
An eye pressure test to check for glaucoma
An examination of the internal and external structures of your eye
A test of your eye coordination and focusing ability
What should I bring to my eye examination?
Please bring a list of any medications you are taking, and your previous eyeglasses or contact lenses (if applicable). If you have a community services card please bring it, this is useful for under 16's in your care and has your MSD client number.
Do I need to dilate my pupils for the eye examination?
Dilation may be necessary during your eye examination to allow for a more thorough examination of the internal structures of your eye. Dilation involves putting drops in your eyes that cause your pupils to widen. Your vision will be blurry (and bright!) for a few hours after dilation, so you may want to arrange for someone to drive you home after your appointment.
Contact Lens Questions
Am I a good candidate for contact lenses?
Not everyone is a good candidate for contact lenses. During your eye examination, your optometrist will assess your suitability for contact lenses based on the health of your eyes, your lifestyle, and your ability to properly care for contact lenses.
How do I care for my contact lenses?
Proper contact lens care is essential for maintaining good eye health and preventing infections. Your optometrist will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for your contact lenses, but generally, this includes:
Washing your hands thoroughly before handling your lenses
Storing your lenses in a clean case with fresh MPS solution
Replacing your lenses according to your optometrist's instructions
What should I do if I experience discomfort while wearing contact lenses?
If you experience any discomfort while wearing your contact lenses, such as redness, burning, or blurry vision, remove your lenses immediately and contact your optometrist.
